Agenda:
  • Activity 3.3.3: Design of a Prosthetic Arm
  • Kahoot.it

Procedure
Part I: Design of a Prosthetic Arm
1. Obtain a Design Process handout from your teacher.
2. Look at the list of provided materials and brainstorm ideas on how you can design your arm so that it is able to grasp and pick up an empty Styrofoam cup. Pick up the cup with your own hand and analyze what had to happen for this action to occur. You do not have to use all of the materials that your teacher has provided; upon teacher approval, you can bring in your own materials if you would like.
3. Share your ideas with your group.
4. Come to a group consensus about your group’s design and draw a labeled drawing of the design in your laboratory journal. Identify which materials will be used where. You can use the Design Process handout as a reference to help you as you plan your design.
5. Have your design approved by your teacher.
6. Create your working model.
7. Present your model to the class and demonstrate how your model can pick up the Styrofoam cup.
8. Answer Conclusion questions 1 – 3.
9. Review the muscles of the arm, the forearm, wrist, palm, and digits at the Functional Anatomy of Skeletal Muscles portion of the Get Body Smart website, found at:http://www.getbodysmart.com/ap/muscularsystem/menu/menu.html (Links to an external site.)
10. Click on each muscle to view muscle attachments as well as muscle motion.
11. Answer Conclusion questions 4 – 6.
12. Read Isaac Perry Clement’s article How Prosthetic Limbs Work, found athttp://health.howstuffworks.com/prosthetic-limb.htm (Links to an external site.).
13. Answer Conclusion questions 7 - 9.
Part II: Cutting-Edge Prosthetic Limbs
14. Read Jeremy Dailami’s article The Myoelectric Arm: It’s Electrifying, found at http://illumin.usc.edu/111/the-myoelectric-arm-it39s-electrifying/ (Links to an external site.)

Part II: Cutting-Edge Prosthetic Limbs
14. Read Jeremy Dailami’s article The Myoelectric Arm: It’s Electrifying, found athttp://illumin.usc.edu/111/the-myoelectric-arm-it39s-electrifying/ (Links to an external site.)
15. READ THE Outlining and Summarizing Guidelines handout on google drive:https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-uPIvmZGNt-OXZZS3lrSG9EZEE/view?usp=sharing
16. Follow steps one through six on the Outlining and Summarizing Guidelines to create an outline of the article using the Outline function in Inspiration®.
17. Answer Conclusion question 10.
18. Follow your teacher’s instructions to familiarize yourself with the equipment you will be using in this experiment.
19. Connect the LabQuest Mini interface to the computer.
20. Connect the EKG sensor to channel 1 on the LabQuest Mini computer interface.
21. Start the Logger Pro program and open the PLTW folder. Open the Prosthetic Arm file from the Design of a Prosthetic Arm folder within the PLTW folder.
22. Attach three electrode tabs to the arm of the subject. Two tabs should be placed on the biceps muscle, approximately 5cm apart. Attach the third tab to the forearm. Make sure to clean the surface of the skin with soap and water or alcohol swabs before attaching the electrode tabs.
